As recently as two years ago, the vast majority of people outside of the food industry and the medical community had never heard of "trans fat". Prior to January 2006, nutrition labels rarely listed the trans fat content. Someone familiar with trans fat still had to carefully check the ingredents list on the label and look for phases such as " partially hydrogenated vegetable oil" or "partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil" to determine if the product contained any trans fat.
Walk through the frozen food isle of any grocery store. Pick up virtually any package of frozen french fries and read the label. It almost certainly contains trans fat. It is virtually impossible to find a bag of frozren french fries that contain no trans fat. At least the label now states how much trans fat is in the product. It is also getting easier to find items that contain no trans fat but we still have a ways to go.
